The goal of this project was simple - to preserve the stories and images
of the Fightin' 79th in a digital format and to make it available to
a wider general audience. This will be achieved through the creation
of a multimedia CD-ROM, entitled "The Fightin'79th In World War
II" and this companion website. Anyone with minimal web browsing
skills will be able to access this information at their leisure in the
comfort of their own homes.
This multimedia CD-Rom contains over 1000 wartime photos, most
never before published and unique to the 79th Fighter Squadron, not
just generic stock photography. Most of these rare images have been scanned
at 300dpi and are presented in jpg format with only minimal
digital restoration or enhancement to retain their originality.
The entire collection has been laid-out in an easy to
use manner and only your internet browser is necessary for viewing.
The videos are in mpg format and can easily be viewed with your Windows
Media Player.
Every pilot, ground officer, and enlisted man is included. The pilot profile section features information about their
combat career and related stories. The complete roster of enlisted personnel
includes their serial numbers as well as the places and dates of enlistment. Special sections
are devoted to the Commanding Officers, Prisoners of War and those who
made the ultimate sacrifice in the skies over "Festung Europa". Also
included are over 100 Virtual Galleries of items relating to a specific
officer, including additional photographs, excerpts from reports and more.
Nearly two years in the making, many noted aviation authors,
artists, photographers, researchers and historians from all over the
world have opened up their archives and numerous surviving members of
the 20th Fighter Group and/or their families have submitted material
for inclusion. The end result is an in-depth and innovative overview
of a USAAF squadron unlike any other that has ever been compiled - in
any media.
